키다리갤러리가 오는 2월 14일부터 3월 14일까지 러브 테마 기획전 '2026 큐피트'를 개최한다. 큐피트 전시는 매년 발렌타인데이와 화이트데이 시즌을 기념해 사랑을 주제로 한 작품들을 전시하며 관람객들에게 '사랑'의 정의에 대한 생각과 메시지를 전하는 테마 전시로 올해 12회째를 맞이한다. '사랑'이라는 보편적인 주제를 예술적인 시각으로 꾸준히 재해석하며 관람객에게 따뜻한 감동을 전해줄 수 있는 작가의 작품들로 선정하여 전시 공간을 꾸미는 올해 큐피트 전시에는 테즈킴, 김은주 작가가 참여하며 각기 다른 온도의 사랑과 관계에 대한 이야기를 펼쳐낸다.

테즈킴 작가는 과학과 이성의 시대에서 사랑이라는 위치를 냉철하면서도 따뜻한 시선으로 바라본다. 작가는 사랑이 종족 번식을 위한 유전적 명령이나 호르몬의 작용이라는 과학적 사실의 낭만적 해석이라는 것을 부정하지 않는다. 그는 그럼에도 불구하고 인간이 이러한 생물학적 메커니즘 위에 무조건적이고 이타적인 사랑이라는 숭고함을 예술을 통해 덧입히는 행위에 집중한다. 작가는 존재하지 않는 것을 믿고 가치를 부여하는 인간의 상상력이야말로 가장 인간적인 행위라고 정의한다. 또한 사랑이라는 허구적 판타지를 공유하고 믿음으로써 그것을 현실로 만들어가는 과정을 통해 비로소 인간적임이라는 말이 사랑스럽다는 말과 동격이 되는 시대가 올 것이라 믿으며 그런 마음을 작품에 담아냈다.김은주 작가의 작품에는 마법 소녀가 등장하는데 이 소녀들은 영웅적인 상징보다는 결핍과 욕망, 취약함과 차이를 지닌 채 세계와 관계를 맺는 존재에 가깝다. 신화적 서사와 자연의 이미지는 개인의 내면과 동시대의 정서를 연결하는 매개로 작동하며, 그 연결은 완결이 아닌 진행형으로 남는다.

이번 전시에서 작가는 사랑을 달콤한 결말로 표현하기보다는 타인에게 닿고자 하는 마음이 만들어내는 방향과 거리, 그리고 그 사이의 망설임과 충돌에 주목한다. 큐피트의 화살은 상처를 내기보다는 관계가 시작되는 순간 생겨나는 균열과 감각의 통로처럼 보이기도 한다. 'Red Thread' 연작에서는 화면을 가로지르는 붉은 선을 통해 연결과 긴장이라는 감정을 시각화하며, 사랑은 때로는 매끄럽게 이어지기보다는 다른 감각과 위치가 한 장면 안에 공존할 때 드러나는 어긋남의 결로 남는다. 'Sea Constellation' 연작에서는 같은 하늘 아래 다른 방향을 보는 개인들이 서로의 별이 될 수 있음을 보여준다. 작가는 타인을 바라보는 시선, 자신을 확인하는 시선, 그리고 눈을 감고 감각으로 이동하는 세 가지 태도를 통해 사랑이 지닌 여러 방식으로 지속되는 관계의 형식에 대해 이야기한다.

이번 전시를 기획하고, 작가를 선정한 키다리 갤러리 김민석 대표는 '2026 큐피트' 전의 전시 기간이 발렌타인데이에 시작해서 화이트데이에 끝나는 설정처럼 사랑의 큐피트 화살이 양방향으로 오고가서 서로의 마음이 전해지며 가슴 따뜻하고 설레이는 관람 공간이 될 수 있기를 바란다고 전했다.

이번 큐피트 전시에는 닮은 듯하면서도 다른 테즈킴, 김은주 두 작가의 회화 작품 총 14점이 전시된다.

KIDARI GALLERY will host the love-themed exhibition “2026 Cupid” from 14 February to 14 March. The Cupid exhibition, now in its twelfth year, is a themed display held annually to commemorate the Valentine's Day and White Day season. It showcases works centred on love, conveying thoughts and messages about the definition of “love” to visitors. This year's Cupid exhibition, which consistently reinterprets the universal theme of “love” through an artistic lens and curates works by artists capable of conveying warm emotion to visitors, features artists Tez KIM and Kim Eun-joo. They will each unfold stories about love and relationships at different temperatures.

Tez KIM the author observes the position of love in the age of science and reason with a gaze that is both coolly detached and warmly compassionate. The author does not deny that love is a romantic interpretation of scientific facts a genetic imperative for species propagation or the workings of hormones. Nevertheless, he focuses on the act of humans, through art, overlaying the sublime quality of unconditional and selfless love upon these biological mechanisms. The artist defines the human imagination believing in and assigning value to the non-existent as the most quintessentially human act. He believes an era will come when the term “humanity” becomes synonymous with “loving,” achieved through sharing and believing in the fictional fantasy of love, thereby transforming it into reality. This sentiment is captured in his work.

Kim Eun-joo's works feature magical girls, yet these figures are less heroic symbols than beings who engage with the world bearing deficiencies and desires, vulnerability and difference. Mythical narratives and images of nature function as mediators connecting the individual psyche with the sentiments of the contemporary era, and this connection remains an ongoing process rather than a conclusion.

In this exhibition, the artist focuses less on depicting love with a sweet ending and more on the direction and distance created by the desire to reach another person, along with the hesitation and conflict that arise in between. Cupid's arrow seems less like a wound and more like a crack and a sensory passageway that emerges at the very moment a relationship begins. In the ‘Red Thread’ series, emotions of connection and tension are visualized through red lines crossing the canvas. Love, rather than flowing smoothly, often remains as a crystallization of misalignment revealed when different senses and positions coexist within a single scene. The ‘Sea Constellation’ series shows how individuals gazing in different directions under the same sky can become each other's stars. Through three attitudes the gaze directed at others, the gaze that affirms oneself, and the gaze that closes its eyes and moves through sensation the artist speaks to the various forms relationships take as love endures.

Kim Min-seok, the director of KIDARI GALLERY who curated this exhibition and selected the artists, expressed his hope that the ‘2026 Cupid’ exhibition scheduled to run from Valentine's Day to White Day would become a heartwarming and thrilling viewing space. He envisioned Cupid's arrows of love flying back and forth, conveying mutual affection.

This Cupid exhibition features a total of 14 paintings by artists Tez Kim and Kim Eun-joo, whose works share similarities yet possess distinct differences.
