갤러리 전은 매년 재능있는 청년작가를 발굴하여 전시회를 통한 작가의 창작활동을 지원하고, 청년작가들의 작품세계를 대중에게 소개하는 <청년작가 Project>를 진행하고 있습니다. 2026년 올해의 작가로 선정된 김민호의 초대전 'The Irreducible Essence : 덜어낼 수 없는 본질' 전을 개최합니다.

김민호의 작업은 쌓고, 덜어내고, 다시 깎아내는 반복의 과정 속에서 완성된다. 여러 겹의 채색 아래 잠들어 있던 색들은 연마와 절삭을 거치며 비로소 모습을 드러내고, 그 우연한 흔적들은 새로운 색의 질서와 조화를 만들어낸다.

그가 사용하는 시멘트는 산업 폐기물이라는 물성을 지니면서도, 화면 안에서는 뜻밖의 섬세함과 깊이를 드러낸다. 겹겹이 축적된 레이어 사이로 드러나는 표면은 신비롭고도 오묘한 분위기를 자아내며, 물질이 지닌 시간성과 흔적을 고스란히 품는다.

작가는 이 과정을 ‘썰물과 밀물’이라 표현한다. 깎이고 닳아가며 생긴 스크래치와 상처는 결함이 아니라, 오히려 작품을 완성으로 이끄는 본질적인 요소가 된다. 실수로 남겨진 공백마저도 그의 작업 안에서는 하나의 진실로 받아들여진다.

김민호에게 예술은 사물을 꾸며내는 일이 아니라, 사물이 본래 지닌 존재와 과정을 있는 그대로 드러내는 일이다. 재료를 감추지 않고 과정마저 숨기지 않는 정직함, 바로 그 안에서 그는 작품의 진실을 발견한다.

거칠고 투박한 물성 위에 따뜻한 색감이 스며든 그의 화면은, 강인함과 부드러움이 공존하는 독특한 미감을 선사한다. 그리하여 그의 작업은 물질의 흔적을 넘어, 시간과 존재의 깊이를 시각적으로 증명해 보인다.

Kim Min-ho's work is completed through a repetitive process of stacking, subtracting, and carving. Colors that lay dormant beneath multiple layers of paint finally reveal themselves through polishing and cutting, and these accidental traces create a new order and harmony of color.

The cement he uses possesses the physical properties of industrial waste, yet within the canvas, it reveals unexpected delicacy and depth. The surface revealed between the layers of accumulated material evokes a mysterious and enigmatic atmosphere, fully embracing the temporality and traces inherent in the substance.

The artist describes this process as "ebb and flow." The scratches and scars resulting from being worn down are not considered defects, but rather become essential elements that lead the work to completion. Even the blanks left by mistakes are accepted as a truth within his work.

For Kim Min-ho, art is not about embellishing objects, but about revealing their inherent existence and processes exactly as they are. It is within this honesty—which neither conceals the materials nor hides the process—that he discovers the truth of his work.

His canvases, in which warm colors permeate rough and unrefined materiality, present a unique aesthetic where strength and softness coexist. Thus, his work transcends the traces of matter to visually demonstrate the depth of time and existence.
